Merck studied it in the 1990s and 2000s; Lumos Pharma now studies it as LUM-201 for childhood growth hormone deficiency. No regulator has approved it. Research: In a 2-year double-blind trial of 65 healthy adults aged 60 to 81 (Nass et al, Ann Intern Med 2008;149(9):601-611, PMID 18981485), 25 mg daily raised GH and IGF-1 to young-adult levels. Fat-free mass rose 1.1 kg against a 0.5 kg fall on placebo (P<0.001), with no change in visceral or total fat, and the added lean mass did not improve strength or function. In 563 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, the same dose raised IGF-1 by 72.9% at 12 months and did nothing to the rate of decline (Sevigny et al, Neurology 2008;71(21):1702-1708, PMID 19015485).
Side effects: From Nass 2008: increased appetite that subsided within a few months, transient mild lower-limb edema and muscle pain, fasting glucose up 0.3 mmol/L and insulin sensitivity down, cortisol up 47 nmol/L
