Research: A single 3 mg/kg dose in healthy postmenopausal women raised total lean mass 3.3% and thigh muscle volume 5.1% at day 29 (Attie et al, Muscle Nerve 2013;47(3):416-423, PMID 23169607; 48 women, placebo-controlled). The Phase 2 trial enrolled 24 ambulatory boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and stopped after the second dose level because of nosebleeds and telangiectasias (dilated skin vessels). Its lean-mass and 6-minute-walk changes were trends that did not reach the statistical threshold (Campbell et al, Muscle Nerve 2017;55(4):458-464, PMID 27462804; NCT01099761).
Side effects: Injection-site redness in the healthy-volunteer study (Attie 2013), epistaxis (nosebleeds) and telangiectasias in the Duchenne trial, which ended the program (Campbell 2017)
DiscontinuedAcceleron terminated the Duchenne trial 'based on preliminary safety data' (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01099761, completed June 2011) and did not develop it further. Named on the WADA 2026 Prohibited List under S4.3 as a decoy activin receptor.
