The dipeptide Glu-Trp, known as Thymogen in Russia and as oglufanide (IM862) in US trials. First isolated from calf thymus extract, it was tested as an intranasal treatment for AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma and failed its Phase 3. Available from 10 vendors, priced from $44.99 to $119.00.
Research: A 44-patient uncontrolled study reported major responses in 36% of Kaposi's sarcoma patients on 5 mg intranasal IM862 (Tulpule et al, J Clin Oncol 2000;18(4):716-723, PMID 10673512). The 202-patient, 24-week placebo-controlled Phase 3 that followed found a 23% response rate on IM862 against 21% on placebo (P=0.46). Median time to progression was shorter on IM862, 16 weeks against 35 (P=0.012). The authors concluded it 'was not superior to placebo and may accelerate time to progression' (Noy et al, J Clin Oncol 2005;23(5):990-998, PMID 15598977).
