Research: Because it activates melanocortin receptors non-selectively, its effects extend well beyond pigmentation. The documented harms are in named case reports: rhabdomyolysis (PMID 23121206), renal infarction (PMID 31953620), priapism (PMID 23537392) and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PMID 23648958). Reversible darkening of moles is documented, and that is a separate thing from an increase in melanoma risk, which these reports do not establish.
